RAMCIP workshop at the ERF 2017

The RAMCIP project is organizing a workshop in the European Robotics Forum 2017, entitled “The past, present and future of European service robotics for eldercare and assisted living”.


Motivation and objective

The global population is ageing. Despite the great advances in life-expectancy, more life years are not necessarily translated into more healthy life years. Frailty and emerging cognitive impairments still continue to put significant risks on older populations. While ageing in place is considered the key towards prolonged active and healthy ageing, this is a challenge often difficult to meet, given that it necessitates supervision and assistance provision from formal or informal human caregivers in the older person’s home, often on a constant basis. Domestic service robotics solutions could help alleviate this, relieving some of the caregiving burden.

In this scope, a large number of European research projects are intensively working since the last decade towards the development of service robots to support older adults and disabled persons in need, in their daily domestic life. Significant advances have derived so far, paving the way for future solutions that could be applied in the real practice.

This workshop aims to summarize key achievements of past and present EU research projects in service robotics for assisted living, discuss on the applications of such robotic systems, as well as on the key challenges involved when service robots are to be applied in the real home environments of those in need. Building upon the consolidated discussion on key achievements and lessons learned so far, the brainstorming part of this workshop will aim to provide insights on key current advances, as well as on future trends, towards service robots that can reach wide future adoption and make a step change for those in need.

To this end, the workshop will bring together both present (e.g. RAMCIP, RADIO, i-Support, Enrichme) and past (e.g. HOBBIT) EU-funded research projects on service robotics, summarizing their developed systems, their key advances, applications and challenges encountered when considering their deployment in realistic environments, with their real target end users. The workshop is organized by the present EU-funded project RAMCIP (H2020 – PHC-19 call on “Advancing active and healthy ageing with ICT: service robotics within assisted living environments”), which is developing a novel service robot to provide assistance to MCI patients at their home.

The workshop will consolidate views on the different applications supported by different service robots developed from EU-funded projects, discuss on key advances that each brings into play, and provide insights on key challenges that need to be further met towards future, practically applicable service robots for eldercare and assisted living, of high added value and potential for wide adoption in the real practice.



The workshop will start with short presentations by the organisers and invited speakers, summarizing applications supported by service robots developed from past and present EU-funded projects, their key added value for the target end users, as well as the key challenges encountered towards their use in the real practice.

More specifically, the workshop will start with short presentations on past EU-funded projects (HOBBIT). Presentations on currently active research projects (RAMCIP, RADIO, i-Support, Enrichme) will follow. These presentations are planned to focus on three key different approaches for assistance provision, involving: (a) multi-purpose mobile robots with dexterous manipulation capabilities, such as ones relative to the RAMCIP project concept, (b) smaller-scale multi-purpose mobile robots that operate in strong relation with smarthome infrastructures, such as ones relative to the concepts of the RADIO and Enrichme projects and (c) single-purpose assistive service robots, such as ones relative to the i-Support project concept.

In addition, further presentations will be involved, specifically focusing on the industrial and end user perspectives. On the one hand, the focus will be on key user needs and expectations from service robots for eldercare and assisted living, as well as on acceptability issues. On the other hand, the focus will be on advanced products that are being developed by European robot companies in the context of EU-funded research projects, with a view to better suit the needs of future practical applications.

Following the short presentations, an interactive discussion will take place, in the form of a brainstorming session building upon the presentations’ contents, elaborating on further insights on key current issues, trying to feed into roadmaps and future plans towards practically applicable solutions, of strong added value and adoption potential.
